Organic
Organics, are products that are not grown genetically, and are developed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers or hormones.
Double Distillation
The act of purifying liquids through boiling, so that the steam or gaseous vapors condense to a pure liquid. Plant materials and water are placed in a closed vessel and heated to boiling point. The rising steam is collected and then condensed back into a liquid. This liquid is a combination of the volatile plant oils (essential oils) and the carrier water (hydrosol). The essential oil is then removed.
Aromatherapy
The use of volatile plant oils, including essential oils (extracts or essences) from flowers, herbs, and trees to promote psychological and physical well-being.
Essential Oils
Potent, highly aromatic oils extracted from plants, then used topically in pure form or diluted in a carrier oil. In aromatherapy, appropriate oils are selected to address each patient's unique personality and needs, their different beneficial effects (for example, calming, energizing, cleansing) working by skin absorption and smell.
Diffuser/Nebulizer
A device used to turn liquid into a fine spray. It is powered by a compressed air machine and plugs into an electrical outlet.
Wildcrafted
A term used to describe the manner in which a botanical material is collected from its natural setting in the wild. Grown without cultivation, herbicides or fertilizers and harvested in an ecologically sustainable manner by taking efforts to minimize the disruptive impact on local growing conditions and ensuring the continued vitality of the plant for reproduction.
Carrier Oils
Also known as base oils or vegetable oils. they are used to seal and dilute essential oils when they are applied to the skin. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, nor do they evaporate like them. Some examples are apricot kernel, grape seed, jojoba and sweet almond.
